What You Need to Know Before Your Laser Hair Removal Appointment

September 3, 2025

Laser hair removal is one of the most popular and effective ways to achieve long-term smooth, hair-free skin. At Oakville Medical Aesthetics, we offer state-of-the-art laser treatments that are safe, comfortable, and effective for a wide range of skin types. As we get ready to launch our annual 50% off Laser Hair Removal promotion, let’s answer some of the most frequently asked questions we hear in the clinic.

Can You Get Laser Hair Removal While Pregnant?

While laser hair removal is generally considered safe for most individuals, it is not recommended during pregnancy. This precaution is not due to known risks, but because there’s limited research on how laser energy might affect a developing fetus. As a result, most practitioners (including us at Oakville Medical Aesthetics) recommend postponing treatment until after childbirth and breastfeeding are complete.

Can Laser Remove Hair Permanently?

Laser hair removal offers long-term hair reduction, but not necessarily 100% permanent hair removal. The laser targets pigment in the hair follicle to destroy it, significantly reducing hair growth over time. Most clients experience an 80–90% reduction in hair, with the remaining hair finer and lighter. Occasional maintenance sessions may be required, especially for hormonal areas like the face or bikini line.

How Often Can You Get Laser Hair Removal?

Laser treatments are typically scheduled every 5 to 8 weeks, depending on the treatment area and your hair growth cycle. Facial areas may be treated closer together (every 5 weeks), while body areas may need 6–8 weeks between sessions. We find a treatment schedule of 6 weeks to be ideal. Following this timeline ensures that the laser can target hair in its active growth phase for the best results.

Can You Shave After Laser Hair Removal?

Yes, you can shave after laser hair removal, and in fact, it’s the only method of hair removal we recommend between sessions. Avoid waxing, plucking, or threading, as these methods remove the hair follicle, which is the target for the laser. If needed, wait about 24 hours post-treatment before shaving to allow your skin to calm and reduce any potential irritation.

How Long After Laser Hair Removal Can I Tan?

It’s important to avoid tanning (including sun exposure and tanning beds) for at least 6 weeks before and 2 weeks after your laser treatment. When doing a package we require patients to avoid sun exposure on all treatment areas for the duration of their treatment plan. If going on a holiday in the winter where you will likely get some sun, we recommend booking six weeks after you return to minimise any risk. If you have travel plans in place, we can schedule your treatment plan to work with your travel dates to keep your sessions on track as much as possible. Sun exposure can increase the risk of burns, pigmentation changes, and skin sensitivity. Always apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ to treated areas daily, even when it’s cloudy.
